Griswold CSD Update with Principal Nigel Horton
Griswold Elementary Principal Nigel Horton stopped by to share updates on the school year, new initiatives, and community partnerships. He reflected on a busy but rewarding start to fall, highlighted upcoming events, and explained how strategic planning is shaping the district’s future.
Horton noted picture retake day will be Monday, September 22nd, and encouraged families to contact the main office or classroom teachers if order forms are needed. The school is also excited about several upcoming field trips, including third grade visiting Cass County Ag Day, kindergartners heading to 3Bees Farm, and preschoolers enjoying a day at the zoo.
The district’s mentoring programs are thriving. In addition to TeamMates, Griswold has launched a student-to-student mentoring initiative where every elementary student is paired with a middle or high school mentor. Horton said the goal is to give every child a “real-life hero” and encourage long-term involvement in school activities.
Another major effort is the “para to teacher pathway.” After seeing success with the state-sponsored program, Griswold is now working to fund its own local scholarship to help paraprofessionals complete their education and become full-time teachers. Horton, once a para himself, said the program provides stability and long-term commitment for the district.
The district is also seeing positive results in open enrollment. For the third year in a row, Griswold’s open enrollment outflow has decreased, thanks to community efforts such as opening a childcare center and adding new housing options.
Board business included recognition from the Iowa High School Athletic Association for having no student-athlete or coach ejections last school year. Personnel updates included new hires such as Chase Wallace, a former para now serving as a fourth-grade teacher.
As for activities, fall sports and student events are in full swing, including football, volleyball, FCCLA, esports, FFA events, and the upcoming Teammates service day at Lake Icaria. Horton said the strategic planning process continues to guide the district in focusing on the most impactful goals for long-term growth.
