The Mill Downtown Shenandoah is hosting its third annual back-to-school event this Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free kids’ haircuts, free backpacks stocked with supplies, an open arcade, lemonade, and local vendors make it a day that leaves everyone smiling.

Free Haircuts by Gettin’ Snippy

Jesse Runyon (Gettin’ Snippy) and two fellow stylists set up right in the front windows of The Mill. They bring their own chairs, mirrors, and gear and cut from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. without a break. Kids arrive looking like they’ve had a wild summer; they leave looking sharp and ready for the first day of school. No appointment needed — just get in line.

108 Free Backpacks

Thanks to generous local donations — including support from KCSI, First Heritage Bank, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, the Methodist Church, and many individuals — The Mill has 108 backpacks ready to give away. Roughly half are fun, kid-friendly designs (Minecraft, Mario, bright characters); the rest are solid bright colors that work for older students.

Backpacks are laid out on tables by approximate grade level and contain about 90 percent of typical school-supply list items. Kids themselves come through and choose the one they like. No names are taken, no forms to fill out, no questions asked. Last year the backpacks disappeared in about 15 minutes, so the team is being intentional: nothing is handed out before the 10:00 a.m. start time.

Any leftover supplies will be bagged by elementary or high-school level and sent out the door as well.
