Iowa State students invite Red Oak residents to Feb. 19 housing and floodplain input meetings
Two Iowa State University urban planning students say a class project is underway in partnership with the City of Red Oak to better understand housing needs—especially in neighborhoods near Red Oak Creek.
Julia Leets and Belinda Ginn, both master’s students in urban planning, told KCSI the project is funded through a special grant and will include community meetings, multiple site visits, and an on-the-ground assessment this spring.
They’re inviting community members to stop by an informal “get to know you” session on Thursday, February 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at two locations: the YMCA and the Agora Coffee House. The goal is to meet residents, answer questions about the project, and gather local input that will help guide the semester’s work.
A total of 22 Iowa State students are participating—14 undergraduate students and eight graduate students—with five visits to Red Oak planned during the project timeline. The larger on-the-ground portion is scheduled for March 12–14, when residents may see students around town conducting observations and gathering information.
The team says the final deliverable will be shared with the community in May, though the exact format will be determined as they learn more and receive community feedback.
