Bonnie Mason will turn 100 on Sunday. She said the number still does not feel real.
“This is impossible. I never gave it a thought that this might be happening.”
People around Red Oak already know her. They see her at volleyball games. They see her walking. She lives on her own, still drives, still takes chair yoga at the Y, and still tracks her steps on her phone. Most days she gets close to two miles. Some days it is three.
On Friday morning she sat down with KCSI, joined by her daughter Beth, and looked back across a century that began on a farm in north-central Iowa and landed here — still curious, still moving, and still waiting on the volleyball schedule.
The family is marking the birthday this weekend. Bonnie was firm about one thing: no gifts. Bring a memory instead.
