Red Oak Police Report Single-Vehicle Accident on South Broadway
Two Clarinda residents were taken to the hospital with minor injuries following a single-vehicle accident Monday afternoon in Red Oak.
According to the Red Oak Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:12 p.m. Monday, July 6, to a single-vehicle accident near the intersection of South Broadway Street and 3rd Avenue.
Authorities say a 2018 Jeep Cherokee, owned and operated by 81-year-old Ronald Paul Allen of Clarinda, was traveling south on Broadway Street when Allen suffered a medical issue that caused him to pass out while driving and press the accelerator.
The vehicle left the roadway and struck a street light. The impact caused the Jeep to overturn before colliding with several decorative trees planted along the boulevard. The vehicle eventually came to rest upright on a retaining wall.
Allen became trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by emergency personnel using hydraulic rescue equipment. He sustained minor injuries. A passenger, 82-year-old Phyllis Ann Allen of Clarinda, was able to exit the vehicle without assistance and also sustained minor injuries.
Both occupants were transported by ambulance to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The Jeep Cherokee sustained approximately $15,000 in damage and was declared a total loss. Damage to the street light and decorative trees is estimated at approximately $6,000.
The Red Oak Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Red Oak Fire Department, Red Oak Rescue, the City of Red Oak Street Department, and Montgomery County Dispatch.
