East Mills Community School District is wrapping up the school year with student recognition, creative classroom projects, and several summer opportunities for families.
Guests: Ashlee Cressey, East Mills elementary art teacher; Lindsay Franklin, student support and TeamMates coordinator.
Elementary art teacher Ashley Cressey said students in preschool through fifth grade have spent the year learning the seven elements of art, including line, shape, color, form, and texture.
A highlight of the year was a Student Treasures book project involving kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade students. The project allowed students to showcase both artwork and classroom writing.
Lindsay Franklin, who works in student support and coordinates the TeamMates mentoring program at East Mills, said another memorable project was a kindness rock activity. Students painted rocks with kind or uplifting messages, and the finished rocks are displayed in front of the school.
The elementary school also has several end-of-year events planned. EMS presentations are taking place for elementary students, with each grade getting a chance to learn more and see inside an ambulance. On Friday, East Mills will hold its elementary awards ceremony at 9:00 a.m. in the East gym. Parents are invited to attend. Students will be recognized for kindness, effort, hard work, and other positive qualities.
Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m. Friday, followed by staff recognition later in the day. Staff members will be honored for years of service and other accomplishments.
Looking ahead, East Mills PTO will host its 5K run/walk on Saturday, May 30, at Warner Park. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 9:00 a.m. Registration information is available through the school’s Facebook page. Proceeds support PTO efforts such as field trips, classroom needs, snacks, and student activities.
East Mills will also offer free breakfast and lunch for children this summer, beginning around June 1. Families are encouraged to check the elementary Facebook page or contact the school for exact details and schedules.
The first day of school for the next school year is scheduled for August 25. Classes will begin at 8:15 a.m., with a 1:00 p.m. dismissal that day.
