Homecoming week is on the board as a win. The next four days are a weather watch.
Clarinda beat Chariton 14-13 in last Friday’s homecoming game after trailing 10-0 at halftime. Bales called it a district opener the Cardinals needed, even with what he described as an injury bug. High school football is 3-1 heading to Van Meter on Friday. After that come Grand View Christian at Saydel, a pink-out home game against Clarke, then Woodward-Granger on the road.
The dance at the Garfield middle school gym drew more than 250 students — one of the highest counts Bales can remember. Student council adviser Mandy Woods ran online ticketing this year. Stands at the football game were full.
Middle school football has its first home game Thursday against St. Albert. More than 45 players are out in seventh and eighth grade, the most Bales said the program has had in a long time. Clarinda still had to borrow helmets from other schools to get everyone fitted. High school volleyball is 10-3 after a 3-0 sweep of Creston on Tuesday and hosts Carroll on Thursday. The JV volleyball tournament is Saturday at 9 a.m., a 16-team round robin. Middle school volleyball has about 15 to 20 girls on each of the seventh- and eighth-grade sides under Coach Mohler and Coach Woods. Jess Hanafan coaches the high school team.
Band finally put a full halftime show on the field at homecoming after weeks of heat, then rain, that kept the group inside. Shen Fest is this weekend, the first outside performance of the year, with the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree following on Oct. 3. Color guard and winter guard are new this year under Coach Rice, with about 15 girls on flags. Bales’ rule for new activities is simple: find a sponsor willing to run it.
The Jamboree is a chamber partnership. Bales credited Elaine Farwell and Katy Ridge and said more than 50 bands come to town. Parade in the morning, field show in the afternoon. Justin Ridnour is trying to keep the grass football field playable in a bowl that drains, then grows half an inch in three days. Junior high football was scheduled on that field again Thursday.
Cross country is still chasing meets. The home race moved to 9 a.m. at the old Clarinda Academy grounds, on land Bales thanked the Clarinda Correctional Facility for letting the district use. Creston put on a road race so kids could run; Clarinda’s middle school boys won it, with Chipper Weinreich second. Treynor — which also hosts a state-qualifying meet — added Clarinda to a meet next week. State qualifying is about three weeks out.
FFA is into soil judging after summer and before-school practice. Bales put membership over 100 under Mr. Johnson. FCCLA was at its fall rally in Sioux City on Wednesday. FFA and FCCLA ran a blood drive Monday and still have highway cleanup on the calendar.
Inside the junior/senior high, new Hawkeye 10 gym wall graphics are up — with Velcro strips so logos can come off if the conference list changes. Record boards are next, headed for the commons lunchroom after the old trophy case came out. Bales said industrial tech teacher Mr. McCall built a new case at the entrance. Another case is planned for academics. The commons also now shows four
generations of the mascot: the first cardinal, the sailor cardinal, the cocky cardinal, and the current mark.
