Motorcyclist killed in Shelby County crash
A Harlan man died Wednesday evening in a two-vehicle crash in Shelby County, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.
The crash happened April 29, 2026, at about 7:25 p.m. near 226 County Road M16 in Shelby.
The Iowa State Patrol reported that a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by 19-year-old Jacob Buman of Harlan, was traveling northbound on County Road M16. A 2010 APAC 715 sprayer, driven by 37-year-old Luke Applegate of Shelby, was also traveling northbound.
According to the report, the sprayer began turning left into a driveway when the motorcycle struck the sprayer during the turn. The motorcycle came to rest in the west ditch of County Road M16, while the sprayer came to rest in the driveway at 226 County Road M16.
Buman died as a result of the crash. The report states he was transported to the State Medical Examiner by Heartland Funeral.
The crash was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. The motorcycle was towed by Lyons Towing.
The crash remains listed as a fatality case by the Iowa State Patrol.
