NODAWAY, Iowa — Firefighters from multiple southwest Iowa communities responded to a residential structure fire Saturday evening in Nodaway.
According to the Villisca Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 6:03 p.m. on March 21, 2026, to 408 3rd Street for a reported structure fire. Corning Fire Department was also dispatched under an automatic aid agreement.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a two-story residential structure with flames visible on the west side of the home. Officials confirmed all occupants had evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
Firefighters initially began a defensive fire attack before additional personnel arrived, allowing crews to transition to an interior attack.
The fire appears to have originated inside a west interior wall, spreading through interior walls to the north and extending into the second floor. The fire’s progression inside walls and ceilings created challenges for suppression efforts, requiring firefighters to open up those areas to fully access and extinguish the fire.
Additional mutual aid was requested as crews worked to contain the blaze.
No injuries were reported. However, the residence is considered uninhabitable at this time.
The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced residents.
Agencies responding to the scene included the Villisca Fire Department, Villisca EMS, Corning Fire Department, Prescott Fire Department, Grant Fire Department, Stanton Fire Department, Elliott Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Communications, Adams County Ambulance, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Adams County Communications, MidAmerican Utilities, and Southwest Iowa Water Utilities.
