ARION, Iowa — One person was killed and four others were transported to hospitals following a vehicle-train collision early Sunday morning in Crawford County.
The Iowa State Patrol reports the crash occurred at approximately 12:59 a.m. Sunday, July 19, at the Grace Street Union Pacific railroad crossing on the northwest side of Highway 30 in Arion.
According to the crash report, a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 22-year-old Christian Alverado Dimayuga of Omaha was struck by a Union Pacific train. The Jeep came to rest in a ditch between the railroad tracks and Highway 30.
The vehicle was occupied by four adults and a five-year-old child. All five occupants were initially transported to Crawford County Memorial Hospital. Two adults were later flown to Nebraska Medical Center, while the child was transported by ground ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Omaha.
The State Patrol identified the deceased passenger as 24-year-old Sandra Factor Pano of Omaha. She was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.
The report also identified two injured passengers as 21-year-old Jennifer Factor Pano and 27-year-old Jose Aquino Factor. The five-year-old child was also listed as injured.
Dunlap Rescue, Crawford County Rescue, Manilla Rescue and Dow City Rescue transported patients from the scene. The Iowa State Patrol investigated the crash with assistance from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency personnel.
