Red Oak AD Mark Erickson Recaps Volleyball Tournament, Looks Ahead to Homecoming

Red Oak hosted a 16-team varsity tournament on Saturday. Ranked teams in the field included 4A No. 6 Sioux Center, 4A No. 11 Glenwood, 3A No. 2 Western Christian, 3A No. 5 Mount Vernon, 2A No. 12 Red Oak, and 1A No. 8 East Mills.

Erickson said Western Christian asked during the year if a spot was open. They became the 16th team. Sioux Center, Mount Vernon, and Western Christian each drove about three hours. Sioux Center and Mount Vernon stayed overnight.

The Tigers went 3–0 in pool play with wins over Harlan, East Union, and Glenwood and advanced to the gold bracket. Western Christian beat Red Oak 2–0, 21–10 and 21–17. Erickson said the second set was competitive until the last four points. Western Christian then beat Sioux Center for the championship.

He thanked athletic boosters, junior high volleyball players and parents who worked concessions, adults at the score table, and the coaching staff that organizes and seeds the tournament. Parking was tight around the school for much of the day.

 

This week

Monday has no school-day athletics. High school students have a Homecoming volleyball activity at 7 p.m. in the gym. That event is not open to the public.

Tuesday, cross country is at Creston and junior high football is at Tri-Center. High school students have dodgeball at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, girls tennis travels to Atlantic for the regional singles and doubles tournament. Erickson noted tennis is already in the postseason. The state moved the tennis calendar earlier so athletes could play tennis and volleyball. He said conflicts still come up. High school students have pickleball at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Thursday, Red Oak hosts Treynor for junior high and high school volleyball. Junior high starts at 4:15 p.m., JVR and JV at 6 p.m., and varsity at 7:30 p.m. In the Western Iowa Conference, the junior high and high school play on the same night when a school hosts.

Saturday morning, cross country is at Harlan and girls tennis plays team regionals at Shenandoah. Erickson said those students will be back in time for pictures at the Square and the Homecoming dance.
