“Project Sunshine,” created by seniors Lily Marsden and Mariela Rodriguez-Fernandez, is a public service effort focused on sending handmade cards to individuals in long-term care facilities, hospice centers, and children’s hospitals.
The idea began after the students saw a similar concept online involving cards for hospitalized children. From there, they expanded the vision to reach multiple communities, not just their own.
“We wanted to figure out a way to impact multiple areas with our community,” Marsden said.
The project will include local outreach to nursing homes such as Arlington Place, Good Samaritan Society, and Red Oak Rehab, as well as hospice facilities and Children’s Hospital in Omaha.
To kick things off, the students are hosting a community-wide card-making event:
  • Date: April 8
  • Time: 6:00 PM
  • Location: Red Oak High School Cafeteria
The event is open to all ages, and no registration is required. Materials will be provided, along with examples to help participants create uplifting and appropriate messages.
Organizers say the focus is on positivity.
In addition to making cards, the event will include snacks and a Shirley Temple bar, creating a welcoming environment for community members to gather and give back.
School staff praised the students’ initiative and leadership.
“It’s an example of the wonderful students we have and the kindness we’re trying to promote,” said Tracy Vannausdle, instructional lead and counselor.
Those unable to attend can still get involved by connecting with the project through social media under “projectsunshine2026.”
The initiative is expected to grow beyond its first event, with organizers planning additional “Sunshine by Mail” efforts in the future.
