Stanton Community School District head football coach Jeff Grebin is ready for the season to begin after what he called one of the busiest summers of his career. The Vikings open Week 0 tonight (Friday, Aug. 21) at home against Seymour with a 7 p.m. kickoff

 

Other notes from Grebin:

• FCCLA’s first blood drive of the year is Wednesday, Sept. 16, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. in the Viking Center (north entrance by the gym). Sign up via the American Red Cross website or by calling the high school and asking for Mrs. Lori Burton.

• Yearbooks are in and will be distributed the first day of school. Next year’s yearbook is already available for $55 (price rises later).

• Weights continue year-round with an emphasis on durability.

 

Veterans Night and Music Boosters Tailgate Highlight Aug. 28 Home Game vs. Griswold

Stanton will host a special evening Friday, Aug. 28, when the Vikings welcome Griswold for a 7 p.m. home football game that doubles as Veterans Appreciation Night and a Music Boosters tailgate.

The Music Boosters are serving a taco bar (including walking tacos) from roughly 5–7 p.m. Grebin advised arriving by 6 p.m. for the best selection, as food has run out in past years. The event is timed with the veterans recognition to make the night welcoming.

Veterans from Stanton and surrounding communities—including Red Oak, Essex, Villisca, Shenandoah, Corydon, and Griswold—are invited and will be recognized, especially during the national anthem. Details are still being finalized and may include something at half-time. The school has a large flag acquired with involvement from Mr. Hicks; plans call for the teams to hold and wave it during the anthem. Elementary students under Mr. Lance will also sing and help bring energy.

Grebin emphasized that recognition is not limited to Stanton residents. “We’d like to recognize veterans in the area… anybody in their communities that are veterans and have served our country, we’d love to recognize those people,” he said. He hopes a strong crowd fills the stands to show appreciation for the many roles veterans continue to fill in local communities.

The matchup itself is a familiar, hard-fought 8-man contest between neighboring programs that often produces close games. Grebin called Griswold-Stanton games “pretty exciting” and “well contested.
