A historic Vietnam-era UH-34D helicopter, known as “The Flying Memorial,” will be landing at the Council Bluffs Airport on Saturday May 9th. This fully restored Marine Sikorsky (serial #148783) still bears 54 bullet holes from its service with the “Ugly Angels” squadron. The Flying Memorial recently relocated to a base near State Center, IA

While in Council Bluffs the helicopter crew will meet with Col (USMC Retired) Joeph R. Sales , Col Sales was a helicopter pilot with HMM-362 known as the “Ugly Angels”.  The Ugly Angels were the very first Marine Corps squadron in Vietnam and flew the first Mission on April 15, 1962.  There are very few Ugly Angels from this historic mission left and Col Sales is one of them.

This will be a chance for members of the public to see this rare Vietnam era helicopter, restored and still flying.

The YL-37 Helicopter is scheduled to land at events in Iowa and the Midwest this summer.
