Water quality, conservation practices, and a statewide summer giveaway were among the topics discussed during a recent visit with Lucas Oster of Montgomery County Farm Bureau.
Oster said water quality remains an important issue across Iowa, and farmers continue working to reduce runoff, control erosion, and improve filtration on their land. He said Montgomery County farmers have made noticeable progress through practices such as terraces, filter strips, cover crops, and wetland restoration.
In addition to conservation topics, Oster shared information about Iowa Farm Bureau’s Sizzlin’ Summer promotion with Fareway Grocery Stores. The promotion includes 119 participating Fareway locations statewide, including Red Oak and likely the Shenandoah and Clarinda locations.
Participants can enter through the Iowa Farm Bureau website by searching for “Sizzlin’ Summer” and completing a short survey. Each participating location will have a winner selected for a $200 meat bundle. A statewide grand prize winner will receive a $500 meat bundle, a Pit Boss griddle, and a Grizzly Drifter 20 cooler.
Oster said the contest is free to enter and appears to allow one entry per day through the final week of June.
More information on conservation programs, the Nutrient Strategy Newsletter, and the Sizzlin’ Summer promotion can be found through the Iowa Farm Bureau website.
