Financial Picture discussed at the 10/21/26 Meeting of the ROCSD Board of Directors
The district ended fiscal year 2026 with a general fund balance of about $3.8 million, down $197,000 from the year before. Roughly $1.3 million is restricted to specific purposes. About $2.5 million is in assigned and unassigned balances. The activity fund is declining — the district is spending more than it is bringing in — and is being watched closely.
Lorenz stressed that fund balances are not the same as cash that can be spent on anything. Each fund has categorical restrictions. “We’re in great shape right now,” he said, “but if we’re going to continue to be in good shape, we are going to have to start tightening the belt a little bit.” Declining enrollment and state supplemental aid are part of the pressure. He noted the same story across most of southwest Iowa.
The financial reports were listed for discussion. Lorenz said he will confirm whether formal board approval is required at the next meeting. He did not change the agenda midstream.
