Beef producers in southwest Iowa have a four-week course coming this fall. Boots in the Barn is a partnership of the Montgomery, Mills, Fremont, and Page County offices of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
The series meets on four Tuesdays: Nov. 17, Nov. 24, Dec. 1, and Dec. 8. Each night includes a meal at 5:30 p.m., with the presentation starting at 6 p.m. All four sessions will be held at the Lakin Community Center in Malvern.
County Director Sadie Lindgren said producers can pick the nights that fit. Registration is required. The cost is $30 for one session or $100 for all four.
The four nights
Nov. 17 — Feedlot management. Christi Drake of Balance Forward will talk about what feedlots look for when they buy cattle at local livestock markets, and how producers can prepare for that sale.
Nov. 24 — Farm management. Tim Christensen, farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, is the speaker.
Dec. 1 — Pasture management. Aaron Saeugling, Extension field agronomist, and Erika Woolfolk, beef field specialist, both with ISU Extension and Outreach, will lead the session.
Dec. 8 — Herd health. Local veterinarians will close the series.
