Montgomery County 4-H Find Out Night Set for Wednesday Oct. 7 at the White Fair Building
Montgomery County 4-H will host a Find Out Night on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the White Fair Building in Red Oak.
County Director Sadie Lindgren said families can walk in, look around, and leave without filling out a form. Attendance does not commit a child to joining.
“You can just come, have fun with the family, meet new people, and see if you’re interested,” Lindgren said. “You do not have to commit to joining 4-H just because you attend.”
The evening will include information on the county’s 4-H clubs and on project areas youth can take part in. Games are planned for the whole family. A meal will be served for a free-will donation.
Traditional 4-H in Montgomery County is for youth in fourth through 12th grade. The county has four clubs: the East Sunrisers in Villisca, the Stanton Strivers in Stanton, and two clubs in Red Oak, the Grant Spitfires and the Stennett Panthers.
Lindgren said 4-H is more than livestock. Clubs work on sewing, baking, and woodworking. Members take on community service projects and practice public speaking. The point, she said, is leadership and getting ready for the real world.
Living on a farm is not required. Lindgren checked the numbers this week and said 48 percent of Montgomery County 4-H members last year lived in town.
“There’s a spot for everyone in 4-H,” she said.
