Volleyball and football postseason
Volleyball defeated Greene County 3-1 last Tuesday. Tonight the Cardinals face sixth-ranked Cherokee in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. The trip is about three hours and 15 minutes; the team leaves at 2:30. The bracket is loaded—four of the top 20 teams (Cherokee, Clarinda, Van Meter, and Kemper) are in it. Clarinda finished third in the Hawkeye 10, its highest conference finish in a long time, with losses only to Lamotte and Kemper. All starters return next year.
Football is 6-2 and the district runner-up after a win at Woodward-Granger last week. Friday’s first-round playoff is at home against Pella Christian at 7 p.m. Admission is the state postseason rate of $10; regular season passes do not work. An NFHS Network stream is available by subscription, but Activities Director Eli Bales encourages fans to attend in person on what should be a good night for football. Use the new north-side gate; the west gate is closed. Parking assistance from the fire department and EMS has kept things smooth. Andy Harris is retiring after 12 years coaching middle school football.
