Marburger serves as the district’s PreK–12 librarian, English 9 teacher, speech teacher and speech coach.
Speech season is in full swing at East Mills. Students recently competed at district contest in Atlantic, with those earning a Division I rating advancing to State Speech on March 14.
Before then, students will have another opportunity to perform at the Walnut Hill Tournament hosted by CAM on Saturday, March 7.
Marburger encourages the public to attend the East Mills Speech Showcase Night on Monday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the school lunchroom. The event is open to the public with a free will donation. It offers the community a chance to see performances from students who may have competed at district, Walnut Hill or state.
Speech continues to evolve, with a new video casting category introduced this year. The podcast-style format allows students to share their message in a recorded setting. The category is temporary for two years and may become permanent pending a statewide vote by speech coaches.
In addition to speech, East Mills is celebrating Read Across America Week with dress-up days, daily book trivia and a door decorating contest. The district’s theme this year is “Fall Back in Love with Reading,” encouraging students to rediscover the joy of holding and reading a book.
The Scholastic Book Fair will be held March 16–19. Hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday during parent-teacher conferences. Families may use the e-wallet option, and community members can contribute through the Share the Fair program, which helps ensure all students have access to books.
A Buy One, Get One Book Fair is also planned for May 11–14 to help students stock up on summer reading materials.
Marburger says her goal is simple: put books in the hands of students and give them the confidence to use their voice
