McQueen also highlighted efforts to expand career and technical education through Iowa Western Community College and local employers
She said federal funding secured with assistance from Congressman Zach Nunn’s office is expected to support career and technical education programs.
Programs discussed during the interview included:
• Welding
• Commercial driver’s license training
• Emergency medical services
• Mechanical technology
• STEAM education
• Plumbing and HVAC training
• Automotive technology
McQueen said the programs provide opportunities for students who may prefer earning a professional certificate or entering an apprenticeship rather than attending a four-year university.
She noted that many experienced tradespeople are approaching retirement, increasing the need for electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, automotive technicians and other skilled workers.
Local businesses are also developing their own workforce solutions.
McQueen said Josh Wyman, owner of Shore Motor Company, has offered educational assistance to students interested in becoming automotive technicians in exchange for returning to work at the business.
She also recognized Jade Hagey of Wallin Plumbing and Heating for helping students learn about plumbing and HVAC careers and for participating in education and workforce advisory efforts.
