RED OAK, Iowa — Red Oak firefighters responded around midnight Thursday, June 4, to an apartment building at 201 N. 2nd Street after a report of smoke inside the building.
Upon arrival, fire crews reported heavy smoke in the building with an unknown source. Auto-aid from the Stanton and Elliott fire departments was requested while evacuations were taking place and crews continued investigating.
Firefighters later determined the smoke was caused by burnt food on a stove inside one apartment. Officials reported there was no active fire.
Auto-aid from Stanton and Elliott was canceled, and Red Oak firefighters ventilated the building to clear the smoke. The fireground was cleared a short time later without incident.
No injuries or damage were reported.
Responding agencies included the Red Oak Fire Department, Red Oak Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Montgomery County Communications. Stanton and Elliott fire departments were initially requested for auto-aid but were canceled.
