Shenandoah City Council Authorizes Design Work for Airport Crosswind Runway Lighting Upgrade
The Shenandoah City Council unanimously approved Task Order Number Three with McClure Engineering for professional engineering design and bidding services tied to an FAA project at Shenandoah Municipal Airport.
City Administrator A.J. Lyman said this is phase two of the airport’s lighting upgrade. Work on the main runway began a couple of years ago and is essentially wrapped up; the city is waiting on a final site check from the FAA to close that portion out.
The new task order covers the crosswind runway. The project will replace aging incandescent bulbs — which Lyman said were constantly breaking or burning out — with an LED system. The LEDs are expected to be more energy efficient, brighter, and more visible in a wider range of weather conditions.
Tuesday’s action covers the planning and design portion of the work, not construction. The project carries a 90/10 cost share, with federal dollars covering 90 percent and local costs covering 10 percent. Lyman called that a strong match for a regional airport and noted that the FAA funds regional airports well.
Actual construction is not expected until 2028. Lyman said the timeline accounts for the remaining federal process and the limited weather windows available for airfield work. Approving the task order keeps the project moving forward.
