Sherley: first quarter at Southwest Valley West Campus is busy, and the veteran staff is the difference

Sherley: first quarter at Southwest Valley West Campus is busy, and the veteran staff is the difference

Jamie Sherley is about a quarter into his first year as West Campus principal for the Southwest Valley Community School District, and he says the move has been a good one

Sherley oversees Southwest Valley Middle School and Sylvia Enarson Elementary, both in Villisca. He told KCSI the year has been busy, with a lot of learning on his part, and that a veteran staff with few personnel changes made the transition easier.

The job is broader than the behavior work he did as an assistant principal. Sherley said his hands are now in day-to-day operations, student behavior, 504 plans, and the rest of the administrative load. A 504 plan, he explained for listeners, is another way to support a student — related to, but different from, an Individualized Education Program.

• Oct. 1 count not final. Second count this year. Final number likely late January.

• FAST mostly done. IXL used as classroom tool and grade-level diagnostic.

• Pink Out week: volleyball Tuesday night, football Friday.

• HS volleyball about 16-4; Lisa Sparks 100th win about a week before this interview.

• House system: four houses, assigned in elementary, carried through high school, started a year or two ago. Points, monthly mix of ages, end-of-year events. Sherley can award big points later.

• Y-Teens nut sale orders due Oct. 9. Call middle school. Band and choir fundraiser sales start Monday, Oct. 12.

• Trunk-or-treat at both elementaries: Corning Elementary and Sylvia Enarson

• Next visit: Tuesday, Oct. 20. Conferences are Oct. 28–29, 1 p.m. dismissal; no school Oct. 30. First quarter ends Oct. 16.
