Southwest Valley Middle School Highlights Mental Health Awareness

West Campus Principal Liz Timerman said the final weeks of school are always packed with special events, especially as seniors prepare for graduation. She was joined by middle school counselor Erin Wetzel to discuss Mental Health Awareness Month and the district’s efforts to help students better understand and manage their emotions.

  • Mental Health Awareness Month and student emotional wellness.
  • Mental Health Awareness Day: Thursday, May 21.
  • Mental Health Day activities: Reading, cartoons, encouragement cards, coloring, music therapy, rest, puzzles, blessing-counting, rock painting, and physical activity.
  • Student strategies discussed: Breathing exercises, infinity breathing, mindful senses, wall push-ups, physical movement, intentional breaks, and recognizing fight, flight, or freeze responses.
  • Social media concerns: Phone use, gaming, addictive app design, online conflict, and sleep disruption.
  • Ag Day: Organized by Mr. Anderson, Southwest Valley FFA advisor for grades 7–12.
  • Ag Day focus: Farm equipment awareness, road safety, GPS, precision farming, and technology in agriculture.
  • Senior activities: Decision Day, scholarship night, senior walkthrough, graduation.
  • Graduation: Sunday.
  • Athletics: State qualifying track meet at Fremont Middle; girls golf regional on Friday.
