Red Oak School Board Tables Decision on Conference-Wide Hudl Streaming Plan

Red Oak School Board Tables Decision on Conference-Wide Hudl Streaming Plan

The topic was discussed during a special board meeting on April 28, following a recent meeting of WIC superintendents, principals, and activities directors. Superintendent Ron Lorenz says the proposal would introduce a conference-wide digital subscription allowing fans to watch live and on-demand athletic events.
The Hudl Season Pass would cost $7 per individual event or $20 for access to all conference home games. The goal is to expand access for those unable to attend games in person, while also generating additional revenue to help offset rising costs for athletics such as officials and equipment.
Lorenz emphasized the proposal is not expected to generate large profits but could serve as a supplemental funding source while avoiding increases in ticket prices.
The plan would also allow individual districts to sell local sponsorships tied to their broadcasts and retain that revenue. Remaining proceeds from subscriptions would be shared equally among conference schools. Importantly, there would be no restrictions on existing local media coverage.
However, Red Oak board members expressed hesitation, noting the district’s strong partnership with KCSI Radio and a desire to avoid potential conflicts.
The board ultimately voted to table the discussion until more details are available, including revenue distribution percentages and specific contract language.
If approved by a majority of WIC school boards, the streaming model would be implemented conference-wide. Lorenz says even then, Red Oak would still need to determine how to implement the system locally, including decisions on sponsorships and potential equipment upgrades.
The topic is expected to return for further discussion at a future board meeting.
